Opportunities at Liberty Quest Ltd
Vacancies for two Consultants - 09 May 2005

We are looking for two consultants:

Location To work between our consultancy in Wales and the Midlands. Therefore travelling to meet clients and between practices will be expected.

  • A Senior Consultant, with at least five years’ relevant experience, to lead project teams and to win new projects, and
  • A Consultant, who should have at least two years’ relevant experience.

What we offer

  • the opportunity to develop your career in a consultancy where your contribution really matters
  • the chance to expand your knowledge, skills and experience through contact with a wider range of organisations, through thinking through a good range of key issues, and through formal training opportunities as appropriate - all of which can be an excellent way of developing your career
  • the chance to hone your project management skills: good project management is essential to successful consultancy
  • a supportive team environment in a successful consultancy with high standards.

The Senior Consultant role:
We’re looking for someone -

  • to project manage consultancy work for the Partnership, fulfilling clients’ requirements to their full satisfaction
  • Managing projects might well involve more than managing colleagues from within the Partnership as we often work with one or two close associates as part of our team or other sub-contractors, such as a market research company. Project management means meeting clients’ requirements (and exceeding them where we can), within the agreed timescale, to budget, and with attention to growing colleagues’ skills and longer term market potential. It’s an important role, often under-valued;
  • we would be particularly interested in someone with experience in area-based regeneration, the voluntary and community sectors, business development, or skills development. We don’t want a narrow specialist however: much of our success is built on offering clients a broad perspective. So our ideal candidate would be credible in their core field, AND willing and able to join in, and lead, other projects across a good range of what we do

Requirements - for both positions:

  • analytical skills are core. We need good intellectual ability, so you’ll typically have a 2.1 degree or better. Degrees in economics, or economic development itself would be valuable, but we do not want to be too prescriptive.
  • research skills, including curiosity, persistence and imagination (you can’t always find what you want when you want it, so you may need to dig and you may need to think laterally to get to the best available proxy);
  • good interviewing skills;
  • good inter-personal skills and the ability to get on with a wide range of people: elected councillors, business directors, civil servants, training entrepreneurs, community activists, unemployed trainees, project managers, data experts, specialist advisers … and so on;
  • high standards of written work and attention to detail (we care about good quality presentation and pride ourselves on a clear, concise, readable style);
  • some commercial sense: what we do must work commercially if we’re to build a company which is successful for the long term;
  • a willingness to be flexible in meeting the need at hand. There’s no room in a small company for people who won’t muck in or who can’t change direction if the need arises;
  • personal resilience. We’re a supportive team, but there are many occasions when consultants must rely primarily on themselves;
  • personal integrity, and a commitment to a public service ethos. We’re a private company, but all of our clients are in the public sector or working with public funds;
  • commitment to equal opportunities, and respect for other values which our clients (and we) espouse, such as care for the environment, and health and safety;

Company culture

Our approach is to consider the problems from a variety of analytical angles, present a range of options, and ultimately recommend the path the client should follow. But at that point our work is unfinished. Strategy without implementation is a promise unfulfilled. Our mission includes ensuring that our clients internalize the strategies we develop and fully realize their potential by putting them into practice. This often means working directly alongside them to make that happen.

Though in the nature of consultancy work we expect you to be flexible in working from time to time from a wide range of locations across the UK, and perhaps beyond.
